How to Make a Sticker With a Transparent Background
Learn how to upload a photo, choose Transparent, adjust the outline, and export a 1080 × 1080 PNG sticker. This guide explains transparent pixels, why PNG is needed, when to use Solid color, and what the local background-removal option can and cannot do.

To make a sticker with a transparent background, open Create Sticker from Photo, upload a photo, choose Transparent under Background, adjust the outline, and click Download Transparent PNG. A transparent background means the pixels outside the sticker artwork remain transparent instead of being filled with white or another fixed color. This lets the page, chat, poster, or package underneath show through.

What a transparent background means
A normal image often has white, black, or another solid color in its corners. A transparent sticker has no fixed color in those outside areas. Put the same PNG on a light chat bubble and then on a dark poster, and the two surfaces can show through the transparent pixels instead of displaying a rectangular box.
Transparent does not automatically mean that every object in the photo has been perfectly cut out. In the basic workflow, Create Sticker from Photo places the complete photo on a square canvas and applies the selected outline and background mode. If the original image includes a room, sky, or table, that scene can remain part of the sticker. For detailed hair, glass, or complex object edges, prepare a cutout in a dedicated background-removal editor first, then bring the edited PNG back for the sticker finish.
Why PNG is the right format
PNG supports an alpha channel, which stores the transparency of individual pixels along with the image itself. That is why the outside of a transparent sticker can stay clear when you place it over another design. The tool's preview and download workflow uses a 1080 × 1080 PNG, which is suitable for chat graphics, social content, design files, and other applications that support transparent PNGs.
JPG is useful for photographs and solid-color images, but it does not preserve transparent pixels. If you save a transparent sticker as JPG, the clear areas normally become a fixed color and may appear as a square background in the next design. Choose a PNG download when transparency matters, then confirm that the app where you use it supports transparent PNG files.
Step-by-step: make the sticker
01 Choose a photo
In the Upload a photo area, drag in a file or open the browser file picker. The page accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG, and WEBP images up to 15 MB. You can start with a portrait, pet photo, product image, or event picture. A clear subject with enough space around it is easier to check on the square preview.
02 Check the square framing
After uploading, inspect the Live preview. The tool fits the photo into a 1080 × 1080 square canvas while preserving the original proportions. Parts near the edge may be cropped by the square composition, so make sure a face, product, or important text is not too close to the border before exporting.
03 Set the background to Transparent
Under Background, select Transparent. If you need a complete square tile instead, select Solid color and choose a Background color. Transparent is useful when the sticker will be placed over another design. Solid color is more predictable when the background itself should be part of the finished image.
04 Add an outline
Use Outline thickness to choose Thin, Medium, or Thick, then set the Outline color. An outline separates the photo from the page or surface behind it. Try Medium or Thick for a pale photo on a busy background. Thin may be enough when the subject already has strong contrast.
05 Add optional text
If the sticker needs context, enter a short line in Text (optional). You can adjust the font size, text color, and position. The available positions are Top, Center, and Bottom, and Soft shadow can be enabled when the text needs more separation from the photo. Keep the wording short so it remains readable at sticker size.
06 Export the transparent PNG
When the preview looks right, click Download Transparent PNG. The browser creates a PNG using the current outline and transparency settings. If you chose a solid background, Download PNG exports the current design as a regular PNG with that background included.
Transparent vs. Solid color
| Comparison | Transparent | Solid color |
|---|---|---|
| Exported background | Outside pixels remain transparent. | The selected color fills the background. |
| Good for | Chats, posters, presentations, colorful packaging, and layered designs. | Social thumbnails, square cards, white pages, and layouts that need a consistent tile. |
| Main advantage | The sticker can sit on different surfaces without a white rectangle. | The complete square image is easy to preview and use as-is. |
| Watch out for | The destination app must support PNG transparency, and Transparent does not guarantee a detailed cutout. | The background travels with the file and may look like a square when moved to another surface. |
When to use Remove Background
The page includes a Remove Background control. It uses a simple local mask in the browser and is intended for subjects against fairly even backgrounds. It is not an AI cutout tool, so it does not promise perfect results around hair, transparent objects, shadows, or edges whose colors are close to the background.
To try it, upload a photo, choose Remove Background, and inspect the subject edges in the preview. If the background is complicated or part of the subject disappears, start with a more evenly lit image or prepare the cutout elsewhere. Whether you use the mask or not, zoom in on the outline before downloading the final PNG.
Practical examples
- For a pet chat sticker, try a Medium outline and Transparent background so the image can sit on different chat colors.
- For a small-business package design, export a transparent PNG and place it on the actual package color to check the contrast.
- For a birthday, wedding, or travel graphic, add one short message, choose its position, and export a PNG for an invitation or digital scrapbook.
- For a square social thumbnail with a fixed visual treatment, choose Solid color instead of transparency.
Common questions
Does a transparent background automatically cut out the subject?
No. Transparent controls the background pixels in the exported PNG. The optional Remove Background control is a simple local mask for fairly even backgrounds, not a detailed AI cutout.
Why can’t I save a transparent sticker as JPG?
JPG does not store an alpha channel. Use a PNG download when you need the areas outside the sticker to remain transparent.
Which image formats are supported?
The upload area accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG, and WEBP files up to 15 MB. If a file is damaged or unsupported, choose another file that opens normally on your device.
What size is the downloaded sticker?
The live preview and download workflow use a 1080 × 1080 PNG canvas. Check the way your chat app, design software, or printer scales the image for the final use.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
The site says that photos stay in the browser and that processing happens locally. The page does not send the selected photo to a photo-editing API. Even so, avoid placing confidential material into any browser tool unless it fits your own privacy policy.
Check the file before you use it
The workflow is short: upload the photo, check the square framing, select Transparent, adjust the outline, add a short message if needed, and click Download Transparent PNG. Open the downloaded file or place it in the target design to confirm the transparent areas, subject edge, and text position. If the background needs a more precise removal, prepare the cutout first and then bring the cleaned PNG back for the outline and export.
